KEN – THE MOVIE tells a fiction story of the real American musician Ken Stringfellow (The Posies, R.E.M., Big Star), who left America 15 years ago to start a new life in Europe. After a failed relationship, the fictional character KEN for the first time sets out for his homeland to look for his roots.

THE FILM DISTINGUISHES ITSELF BY ITS SPECIAL WAY OF WORKING, FICTION AND REALITY ARE SEEMLESSY INTERWOVEN WITH ONE ANOTHER.

A lot of my fiction films grow out of the characters and my wish to work with certain people. In this specific film project my choice fell on musician Ken Stringfellow.

Penetration of reality and fiction is a recurring theme in my films. On the basis of a long research and development process, I am approaching a real person who later becomes part of a fiction story. In doing so, the fiction is always underpinned by reality and the real life story of the actor. In the context of this hybrid fusion, I would like to get to the bottom of the role of creatively dealing with topics like “loneliness and identity”. In addition, connections of real and fictive places and biographies are established to examine the specific characteristics of the personal and cultural context – in this case the USA and the American reality – making it into a fictional film. The result remains open until the final film and is considerably influenced by the individual work steps.

So the basic plot of the fictional film is: KEN is on tour through the US. But the people and places don’t seem to be nice to him. The shows are not going well. His nerves are at breaking point. One morning, when he wakes up, his voice is gone. Helpless of the situation he has a nervous breakdown, feeling like losing his whole life. He is stranded in a small town, not knowing where to go and what to do. He is feeling terribly lonely. Suddenly comes a long, lost story in his mind, that he had blocked out all this years. As a baby he was abandoned by his bodily mother. He has never seen her again. KEN decides to search for his lost mother, and take a long and painful way back to life.
